Dr. Glory Van Scott: Still Inspiring, Producing, Teaching and Writing!

Have You Read GLORY: A Life Among Legends by Dr. Glory Van  Scott?

GLORY: A Life Among Legends by Dr. Glory Van Scott is a unique memoir which has great historical significance in Black Dance, Black Theatre and Women's Studies.

GLORY takes an unusual approach and paints pictures of many memorable vignettes and life lessons for all of us.

It is amazing to realize that Dr. Glory Van Scott who first appeared on Broadway in the House of Flowers in 1954 and later founded Dr. Glory's Youth Theatre has just written and choreographed a new show The JAZZ GUZZLER which will be presented  at Riverside Theater at Riverside Church in NYC on June 9th, 2019 at 2pm.  Starring in The JAZZ  GUZZLER, a Free Family Musical are the talented youth of Dr. Glory's Youth Theatre with special guests from the Urban Strings Youth Orchestra from Columbus, Ohio.

In the book GLORY, from Katherine Dunham, George Balanchine, Syvilla Fort, Joan Peters and Talley Beatty to Agnes DeMille,  George Faison, Arthur Mitchell, Elizabeth  Catlett, Louis Johnson, Jean Leon Destine, Carmen De Lavallade, Geoffrey Holder and many others;  we see how friendships are formed and lives are nurtured.

We also see how history and activism intersect when a young Glory learns to deal with the vicious murder of her cousin, Emmett Till and with racism later in MISS TRUTH, a show starring and written by Dr. Glory and directed by Louis Johnson.

Her musical MISS TRUTH travels from the Negro Ensemble Company and Carnegie Hall to the famed Apollo Theater, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and on public television.  We are given a front row seat and feel the impact of the show's success but also the inequality and injustice subjected to African American artists at that time.

GLORY honors colleagues and includes many whose have been excluded.  The book has a multitude of historical photos, speaks about the role of an artist in society, and shares the life of a courageous woman who travelled and performed  in many parts of the world, and chose to use her life In Service to Others.

Ultimately, we are given an intimate look at the woman "Glory" through reknown New York Times dance critic Jennifer Dunning and legendary jazz impresario, George Wein, Founder of the Newport Jazz Festival!

It is my hope that many of you will  read, write about and share the book GLORY: A Life Among Legends.  It honors the legacies of many underrepresented artists of color and is a wonderful teaching tool.

And Please,  Join Us at the Premiere of Dr. Glory Van Scott's The JAZZ GUZZLER on Sunday, at 2pm June 9th, 2019.  Tickets are free but we ask that you RSVP to
