For breaking ground as the first African American to study at the School of American Ballet and appearing in an all-white film of Damn Yankees, going on to choreograph The Wiz and Purlie, and mentoring generations of dancers at Henry Street Settlement and around the world.
For instilling in all an undeniable optimism, humanity and unrivaled desire to encourage everyone to be their very best. Honored posthumously
